Blood marrow is extracted from the ridges of bone at the top of the donor's pelvis through large-bore needles. Donors tend to be relatives or siblings with the same tissue type.

Although transplants cure many patients and are classified as standard leukemia treatments, some medical insurers consider them experimental and refuse to cover the cost, which can range from one to two hundred thousand dollars. Many families then either take legal action against the insurer to force coverage or they try to get a free transplant through NIH, the National Cancer Center, or another institution.
